Springfield is ranked as 19th among the top 25 cities in the nation for software development employment.

A 2000 study conducted by the Software & Information Industry Association determined that the number of systems analysts, computer engineers, computer programmers and support specialists in the Springfield area ranked the community as the 19th most concentrated labor market among 325 studied in the United States. Springfield has been named a 4-star community for its high quality of life by Expansion Management Magazine.

In its 6th annual Quality of Life Quotient (May, 2004), Expansion Management magazine compared 329 metro areas and 50 different statistical areas to develop a list of the best places to live and work. The Quotient compared over 50 different quality of life factors. Springfield was rated as among the nation's top 100 communities and given the 4-star rating.

Sangamon County has the highest commuting-in rate of any other Central Illinois County.

According to the 2000 Census, Sangamon County's labor pool is supported by many workers who live in other communities. On a given day, over 18.5% of those working in Sangamon County live outside of the area. This is the highest commuting-in rate of any Central Illinois County and demonstrates a broadness in the labor pool which supports the hiring practices of new firms locating in the area.

Annualized operating costs in the area are favorable. Local workers are viewed by their employers as productive and well-trained. The region's reputation as a site for new expansion is growing. Several communities in the area support accessible industrial parcels, ready for development.

Quality of Life Rankings place Sangamon County in the Top 7% nationwide.

In June of 2004, American City Business Journals rated Sangamon County in the top 7% of counties nationwide for quality of life.
